Code Monkeyism

Programming is hard by Stephan Schmidt

I want to meet Cameron Purdy ;-) Who do you want to meet?

Partially because of the good discussions on TSS about Coherence and the knowledge he has, but mostly because of this recent presentation. It’s about “The Top 10 Ways to Botch Enterprise Java Application Scalability and Reliability”. I’ve enjoyed the video very much and laughed several times so loud my colleague looked up. Cameron made a joke every 30 secs - noone laughed in the audience though I found them all funny.

Meeting Cameron - well no chance - I know - and I wouldn’t know what to say.

Others I’d like to meet are above all Crazy Bob for Dynaop (and Guice), Cedric for his stand on dynamic languages and Rickard of course.

Whom do you want to meet and why?

I’ve met Cameron. I was disappointed.

@Anjan: matt raible, of course! Forgot him.

I think I couldn’t get along with Linux and DHH and Stallman because of their style, and I’m not very interested in Bill - there is still this -perhaps wrong - innovation-copy image in my head.

Hey! he stole the first slide that I use in all of my presentations. I can’t wait until I meet him also ;-) The kids book theme is just rocks. This ranks as one of the best presentations that I’ve seen for both technical information and entertainment value.

Since it’s summer in Berlin right now I would love to meet warg, eac, kosch and funzel again. What do you think?

stephan

I’ve met warg for 10min 10min ago :-) Well and eac …. otherwise, me too!

french_c

Did you move into the new office yet?

nlotz

I would have wanted to meet Larry Ellison right after Camerons Talk … =)

stephan

Me to ;-)

Wow, it’s pretty funny to see one’s name in such a context. I am glad you liked the presentation. When we meet, hopefully I will be as funny as I was in the presentation ;-) As for the others on your list:

* Crazy Bob is a lot of fun, and can truly be quite crazy (what happens in Vegas, …). Unbelievably bright (despite his attempt to fool you into thinking that he’s just a crazy idiot), and occasionally very thoughtful and introspective ..

* Cedric is (as you can see from the comment above) a great friend to keep one humble. He may pretend to be caustic at times, but he’s actually a softy (American: he’s just a teddy bear) and I have long enjoyed his unique (and interesting) personality even though he usually is looking for ways to use his intellect to put me down ..

* Rickard is quite enjoyable to sit and talk with on a range of topics. Quiet confidence, excellent humor and a brain that contains as much knowledge as opinion ..

This industry has a lot of fun characters, most of whom are very accessible (you can just walk up at a conference and say “hi”).

Peace,

Cameron.
